Last year Thumbtack's rolling research program delivered 21 studies to 15 product teams, increasing the breadth of research access, and building the learning skill across teams. This steady pipeline of new data met product builders where and when it was needed, and built the confidence to ship features that make a difference to pros.
Why it matters: Most founders aren't rejecting research, they are rejecting the version they've seen so far: 40-page reports that arrive three shipped features too late. Instead, rolling research is ongoing, and ready for product teams when needed. Rigorous research is about clarifying which questions you will – and will not – answer, so we use resources efficiently.
Here's how the whole thing works.
- Intake: a Google Form is the base, but custom apps are common. Product teams fill out a form with key questions about the project scope, stimulus, user profiles, and other key dimensions.
- Triage: on Friday requests get scoped, prioritized, or split to resubmit. We put scoped projects on the rolling research roadmap and give advice for too-big projects to split and resubmit so we can tackle them in a tractable timeline.
- Project Kickoff: Monday. Recruiting typically starts same day, depending on audience.
- Observers and Superstar Sessions: We use tools like Rally and dscout that make observer participation dead simple. For stakeholders who want to see only the best sessions, we ensure they are called in; because an hour of watching beats ten pages of reading.
- Project Outputs: Flash Findings are a short, decision-oriented readout, not a report. They contain insights and recommendations, and detailed research questions-and-answers, ensuring you and your team are learning what you need to, at speed.
- The Learning loop: every study ends with a CSAT and tactical and strategic quality measures, insight submission into the research repository, and RAG pipeline ingestion for your AI. The program quality gets continually researched, the project's insights are regularly ingested by your humans and AI.
We cut scope, not corners.
People think we cut corners to go fast, but really we cut scope. Two week studies require two week questions: how does this key interaction work for users, which of these concepts lands and why, or which of these articulations do users prefer most? We focus the big questions on tractable, realistic research timelines that work within your logistical constraints.

No – when a process is reliable and repeatable, it ends up being quite fast. In the old model, you are constantly fielding different sized projects and questions that come in with wildly different resource needs, stakeholder sets, and product impact fields. This new rolling research model is precision learning: focused and rigorous repeatable learning. Focused signal means less noise.
